Hi folks! Here is the Friday Element Quiz. There won't be a quiz next week due to the IPC Midwest Conference in Chicago. The Question: This element occurs as a native metal in the Earth's crust. The annual production of this element is small - the total quantity of this element produced in 2000 would fit into a cube just 5 meters on a side. The largest single chunk of this element was 90 kg found in Australia in 1872. This element is the most ductile metal as 1 kg of it can be rolled into a sheet only 10 nm thick with an area of 5000 square meters (i.e. the size of a football field). Bonus points: The origin of the word "crass" is related to this element. Name the person associated with the element/word origin. The Answer: The element is Gold - Au! Diljit Matharu, Creation Technologies, provided the bonus points answer in great detail (thanks Diljit) . Marcus Lincinius Crassus was famous for extravagant expenditures. Orodes, the Parthain king who defeated him in battle, ordered his men to fill the mouth of Marcus's severed head with gold and pronounced "There, sate thyself now with that metal of which in life thou wert so greedy". Gold has the highest infrared reflectance of any metal, 99% at near-infrared wavelengths. Also, in compounds with alkali metals, gold is an anion and the compounds are transparent - more like a salt than a metal. The winner of this week's quiz is Graham Collins with lots of folks also providing the right answer. Clumpy assist Graham for a week - probably working on the boat. So far Clumpy has: Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings - accomplished nothing (drank lots of coffee) Week 2 Bev Christian, RIM - conducted REACH material testing Week 3 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics Inc. - Solderability testing and mowed the lawn Week 4 Ian Fox, Goodrich - had an epic journey of travel Week 4 Gary Ferrari, Garrick Global - ???? Gary owes us a description Week 5 Fredrick Miller, Astrolab - ???? Fredrick owes us a description Week 6 David Nelson, Raytheon - Was a tackling dummy for Dallas Cowboys Week 7 Graham Collins, L3 Communications - ????? Have a great weekend and hope to see folks at the IPC Midwest Conference.
