Looks like the glass encapsulation does not extend over the end of the package. -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of stephengregory5849 Sent: Tuesday, February 09, 2010 12:08 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [TN] Rough surface of glass diode (Fairchild 1N4148) Hi David, Just finished wave soldering a bunch of boards tonight, and got a chance to post your pictures. They are here: http://stevezeva.homestead.com/files/Fairchild_1N4148.jpg http://stevezeva.homestead.com/files/Shiny_surface.jpg http://stevezeva.homestead.com/files/Rough_surface.jpg Looks like solder to me. Have you taken a solder iron to it and see if it liquifies? Don't know how that would happen, and really don't know if that is going to be a problem with the lead to glass seal. Doesn't look right to me... Thanks. All, Two different surfaces were found on Fairchild glass diode (1N4148), one end is the regular shiny surface while the other end is a flat, rough surface. Later please see pictures for details. What is the rough surface? How is it formed? Does it functionally affect the performance and reliability? I guess it's formed during molding, but not sure. I send the pictures to Fairchild but they want some parts back to analyze before tell what it is. Anyone saw this before? Thanks.
