When I was at Toshiba we used the word "Ketsu" which I was told was Japanese for "not fitted" though this was by word-of-mouth from fellow Englishman so I don't know true this is, and we marked such components on the circuit diagram as "open" which is something I've maintained doing since. Recently I've moved over to adding the new standard: DNI for Do Not Insert, ALT for alternative, MO for Model Only (prototyping).
