Hi Inge We occasionally receive long lists of chemicals and substances which we have to certify are not present in our products or our manufacturing. On first sight they look like an impossible task. On investigation these lists are invariably repetitions of all the substances that have been subject of legislation banning them. They are usually grouped according to the legislation topics and in chronological order of the legislation. Amongst these would be ROHS. These look very difficult on first sight, but [for us anyway] are not that onerous as it is easy to see that about 98% of the stuff does not apply. Likely REACH will affect this as it is getting into everything in the compliance/EHS zone. Specifically on ROHS: Certain aerospace and high rel defence companies do have continuing concerns about Pb-free, and require strict analysis/certification. Their concerns are the opposite of most other people: make sure that no damaging Pb-free [finishes] creep in to their facility. So as we, in common with most larger solder companies, routinely give a solder analysis and RoHS statement with every shipment this actually is not really a problem. I am also aware that occasionally companies do have difficult requirements on component values. These seem be those wanting to get very tight accuracies on resistor values, but for some reason can't use hybrid thick film, usually size/complexity expense, sometimes expense. (For those few who possibly don't know: hybrid thick film resistors can be accurately/individually laser trimmed). Maybe Boeing falls into this category. Hope this perspective helps. Am consulting at another company. They needed help with doing analysis of components. Boeing is incorporated. I got a list of forbidden materials from them. Not many can cope with Boeing's requirements. Only a few in whole Europe! Now, I've a question. Has anyone of you been involved in such tough demands, namely this one...not only they call for checking the finish of every component type, but all values (!!) within each component family. That means, that one sample from EVERY resistor value must be analyzed and reported to Boeing. An incredible job list. Does this make sense? /Inge --------------------------------------------------- Technet Mail List provided as a service by IPC using LISTSERV 15.0 To unsubscribe, send a message to [log in to unmask] with following text in the BODY (NOT the subject field): SIGNOFF Technet To temporarily halt or (re-start) delivery of Technet send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet NOMAIL or (MAIL) To receive ONE mailing per day of all the posts: send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet Digest Search the archives of previous posts at: http://listserv.ipc.org/archives Please visit IPC web site http://www.ipc.org/contentpage.asp?Pageid=4.3.16 for additional information, or contact Keach Sasamori at [log in to unmask] or 847-615-7100 ext.2815 ----------------------------------------------------- ***This email, its content, and any files transmitted with it, are intended solely for the addressee(s) and may be legally privileged and/or confidential.
