Actually, getting a model can be pretty easy, but a bit costly. Take your finished board and have it scanned using a 3D scanner, then print it out using a 3D printer. We have a NextEngine scanner and a Dimension 3D printer since we're often repackaging some OTS device to be used where it was never intended and it allows us to easily generate the locational data for all features. There are some services that can do this for you and if you want to contact me offline, I'll connect you. Meantime, here's a link to Jay Leno's site where he demonstrates the setup we actually have at Nielsen. http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/video_player.shtml?vid=944641 Bob Croslin The Nielsen Company -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Jerry Dengler Sent: Friday, July 17, 2009 11:02 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [TN] Shrink Wrap a Board I once saw a product that had a separate plastic cover that was vacuum molder to fit closely over the PCB. It was not molded to the PCB but was molded to a model that had been made of the PCB. In that application they actually glued the cover at the corners to the PCB after it had been screwed down to the enclosure. They said it was for the same reason you give, to keep a stream of water from directly contacting the PCB. I do not know where they had it done but I think getting a good model would be the hardest part. And Friday seems to be a time for silly questions, so here goes. Have any of you ever seen a product that essentially vacuum forms a plastic film over the surface of an assembly? Not a chemical vapor deposition like Parylene or conformal coat process. For a particular (really odd) application, I want to put a rain guard on the surface of an assembly. Something where I could take a squirt gun and shoot water at the assembly and never have it hit the surface (of the assembly). Don't ask why.
