Decades ago unions were the solutions to the workforce problems those days. Now another kind of change and strategy is needed where common people's lives are not devastated by corporations, where common employees play a role in stabilizing regional employment landscape. -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Croslin, Robert Sent: Friday, July 10, 2009 1:28 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [TN] NTC: I just joined the ranks of the unemployed... Having been on both sides of the table, there's no good way to do it, but some are just cruel. When I was at Square D in the late 80's, as the company was being prepped to be sold to their new handlers in order to make a very few people a lot of money, they laid off three engineering groups in one day. I was asked to stay on and help with the shutdown of the engineering department over a 2 to 3 month period, and of course, not having any immediate prospects and a kid in college, I did. I still regard that decision as one of the worst of my life. Watching good friends and coworkers going out a few at a time over that period was probably the most depressing thing imaginable. In retrospect, I wish I'd just said "OK, see ya" and left that day. The worst part is that they were incredible clumsy in handling it. Several days beforehand, I got a call from a job shop I'd often worked with wanting my resume. I was told my name was third on a list they had, and sure enough, a week later, I was the third one called. One of the worst layoff's I ever went through, even though I didn't get laid off, was a big one where HR would get on the PA every half hour or so and read off a list of the next terminations. This went on all day, very nerve wracking and a VERY long day!
