The specification from the connector manufacturer should be checked to verify that you can use this fine wire construction with their connector. -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]]On Behalf Of Forrester, Michael (H USA) Sent: Wednesday, March 11, 2009 10:00 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [TN] Cable Pull Test specifications I have a cable vendor that states the following: "Currently have issue with inconsistency of tensile strength of the crimp using wire ULTRA-FLEX PVC 1251/14 BLACK, due to the flexibility of this wire item and the large amount of strands, at 1050 strands at 44AWG. After conducting several pull tests found that the breaking points all ranged from 44lbs to 49 lbs with no consistency. I then conducted a pull test on a typical 14 AWG, 19 strand wire and the result was 89 lbs for comparison purposes. Due to not being able to duplicate the acceptable pull test from previous shipments and considering the properties of this high stranded and flexible wire we feel it will not consistently meet the UL 486 standard 14 AWG pull test requirement of 50lbs" During testing, the cable breaks right at the crimp. Should the cable be able to take the 50 lbs even though there are many fine strands making up the 14 AWG wire? Is the cable not crimped properly and only the outer strands are taking the load cusing a "failure". The vendor is looking for a deviation to reduce the pull test requirement to 45 lbs. Since the Mil-T-7928 spec is 70 lbs and the UL 486 spec is 50lbs, I'm not sure if the make-up of the wire (fine strands) really factors in or the vendor needs to crimp tighter on the cable to add strength? Any comments would be welcomed. Thank you. Michael Forrester Sr. Product Engineer Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics 101 Silvermine Rd.
