Landfills have plenty of acid, in fact they have lots of acetic acid as the by-product of bacteria breaking down rotting fruits and vegetable matter. However, our lab group has mixed the solutions from the EPA leaching test (low pH, high acetic acid content) with whole Blackberries, Blackberries cut into the chunk sizes asked for the in test and Blackberries ground to dust and then mixed them up with sand, gravel topsoil, egg whites and cardboard. In the case of the latter three, there was little or no soluble lead left. Why? Well I am not a soil chemist, but I can tell you I picked egg whites and cardboard because I know they both contained a lot of sulphide which will react with ionic lead to form PbS, one of the most insoluble lead salts known to man. I can't see lead leaving any properly maintained first world landfill. Hi Shawn, No, it is not about Pb dust, but in what environment it winds up in--acidic or base [or pH level if you wish]. Stomachs are acidic environments, hence Pb-poisioning when Pb is ingested; landfills and most of nature, but not all is base, hence no leaching of Pb in landfills as measured down-stream. I remember back about 20 years ago, going to Gettysburg and watching people try to find old bullets in the ground. I find it interesting that lead is stable enough to stay in topsoil for decades, yet seemingly absorbed into the bloodstream very easily. Yet, unless if I am mistaken, there are little precautions for handling solid lead (based upon what little I know of OSHA rules for soldering--we went through that a couple of years ago and I don't remember anything bad being found for us) required, outside of washing ones hands (and presumably not nibbling on it). It's all about lead dust, apparently. I guess old lead based paint, as it cracks (UV exposure? Last dregs of solvents outgassing, leaving it more brittle?) is what causes the most exposure? Yeah Richard, you wonder where peoples heads are at sometimes. A lot of people forget where most all elevated blood lead levels in children come from. It's from the paint in older homes built prior to 1978 when lead in paint was banned. Blood lead levels in children have declined 89% since the ban in paint and the lead in gasoline. That being said, there's still a lot of pre-1978 homes out there that people are renovating and not being as careful as they should when they do that, and a large percentage of children are still getting contaminated from the paint even though it was banned over 30-years ago. Take care of the paint in all the older structures and you will most likely eliminate all elevated blood lead levels in children.
