Bob, I didn't really pick up what you were looking to do with the dummy parts - If you are testing out wirebonding to IC's then do as Wayne says and get some from Chip Supply, etc. Practically speaking, unless they have been scraped off the floor and packaged in-bulk in a plastic bag, they should be reasonable to work with. Wire bonding to electrolytic Ni & Au plated kovar [etc] tabs is like laying on the beach with a brewski in hand. Sweet! Excellent for checking out the bonder! If you are working on a chip on board application - I can virtually guarantee you that you will take more issue with the consistency of the board plating than you will with device consistency. If you need more help, you can contact me off-line. What I am about to say next may sound too much like the sales pitch of an under-[un]employed wire bonding guru ... :-) Steve [log in to unmask] [log in to unmask] -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Thayer, Wayne Sent: Thursday, February 26, 2009 12:40 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [TN] Wire Bonding Dummy Parts Wirebonding setup is often painful. Using "setup parts" which weren't made at the same fabricator as the parts you are planning to use is only helpful for training on the machinery. Gold plated (over nickel of course) Kovar about 0.5mm thick welds (wirebonds) readily and is pretty easy to get. So I recommend that for training purposes. If you REALLY want to play with semiconductor die, then I'd recommend calling ChipSupply or one of the other die distributors to see if they care to unload junk parts. But they could be junk because they have too small a parameter "window" for production wirebonding, so you could just be learning how difficult things can be by getting them.
