Doug, We are currently using the eddy current method to measure our conformal coating thickness. Recently we had some issues where one operator was making adjustments to the coating thickness every time they measured the thickness coupon. After a shift change the operators would run another coupon through only to find that the coating was thicker then needed and would change the settings back. What we found out was that the operators were using varying amounts of pressure changing the readings on the meter giving us measurements that were not in control. We now have an automated system that applies the correct amount of pressure continually providing us with more accurate readings. Does anyone here use eddy current methods to measure applied coating thickness on printed circuit assemblies? If so, can you share your opinions on the methods and the equipment? There are testers on the market that do this and one of our design engineers is currently suprised at how we are using "stone age" technologies (micrometer) to measure coating thickness.
