Yeee-Hawww!!!  Go for it, Barbara  :)

<OPINION>
As long as the Designer's Council is "owned" by the IPC, and the IPC remains primarily a trade association of board manufacturers, this is the way it will be.  One thing you didn't note:  There is not any representation on the IPC board for the DC, so all decisions by the IPC board about the DC has no official comment by the DC membership.  As a result, the leadership of the DC is beholden not to the members but to certain "friends" on the board whose interest is not necessarily with the membership.

I agree with you 100%, Barbara.  I had already significantly reduced my involvement with the local chapter of the Designers Council, and will not be renewing my membership when it comes time to "re-up".

(Note that this is MY opinion, not that of my employer, its parent, or any associated organization..)

I have been an individual member of the IPC Designer’s Council for 19 years….but, no more.

Because:

1.       As a designer, I need to know the specifications for fabrication and assembly of any board that I design.

a.       Several years ago, I attempted to use my member discount to purchase specifications for fab and assembly. My discount use for these documents was denied because some fool at the IPC had decided that I did not need that information to do my job. They are so wrong. Really wrong. Awfully wrong.

2.       The national leadership of the Designer’s Council stopped listening to or interacting with the Council representatives, thus making the Designer’s Council ineffective in accomplishing anything that benefited designers.

Apparently, they think that they do not need us, nor do they care about us or our function in the overall process. Again, they are so wrong, really wrong, awfully wrong. An excellent design is the beginning of an excellent, cost effective product.

How this is all suppose to work, is blind to most designers.

Does everyone know that you, as a member, are to have a representative to the National Designer’s Council? If you know, do you ever talk to your representative about your concerns and then get feedback about the Council’s national activities?

Do you know that our requests fall on deaf ears or meetings that are held once or twice a year at conferences?

IMHO,

Barbara Burcham, C.I.D.

Subject: [DC] Designers Council Membership-Coupon Usage

Dear Designers,

Please allow me to offer some clarification:

The IPC Designers Council is for individuals only.

Currently, the charge for annual membership is $50. New and renewed members receive a $50 Designers Council Coupon; it may be applied to purchase of any IPC document, and to registration for design-related events.

Designers Council members also receive discounts on an ongoing basis: on design-related IPC documents and programs. You will find the list of documents at  http://dc.ipc.org/documents/DiscountedDocuments.pdf.

Membership in the IPC-Association Connecting Electronics Industries is for organizations, with site-specific membership fees based upon number of locations. IPC member companies have the opportunity to participate in and access reporting on industry trends, and to receive discounts on all IPC documents and programs.

For complete information about the IPC Designers Council, please cut and paste this into your browser: http://dc.ipc.org.

Feel free to contact me directly with any questions.

Very truly yours,

Anne Marie Mulvihill
