In case of barrel cracks it can become even more complicated as the quality of plating can make it look as necking. Look for a thinning right at the break site. With fast onset catastrophic type failures thinning is frequently observed. Copper thinning is s very subtle condition however and is usually over looked. You know there is a lot more to be said about barrel cracks, crack propagation, roots causes etc. and not enough time to do so in this forum. I just try to hit the major points.
