The dynamics of the machine can make as much of a difference as the cleaning chemistry. You should probably come to the IPC/SMTA Cleaning Symposium in Chicago in October. If you are looking for the safest method of cleaning, then I would go with deionized water at 145-150 deg. F. and a good water soluble flux process.
