Since anodizing is carried out by growing an oxide layer on the surface, solderability of an anodizes stainless steel will be non-existent. Don't forget that naturally stainless grows a thin chrome oxide layer which is in the main what imparts its inherent corrosion resistance, so to solder to it you need an extremely acid flux. The only stainless "anodizing" treatment I know of is the Prismatic process (if aged brain remembers correctly) and it is used to decoratively colour the surface by thickening the oxide layer, different thickness gives different colour. End result is not solderable unless you abrade the layer off and use a highly acid flux Regards Ian Fox Lead Materials and Process engineer Goodrich ECS York Road Hall Green Birmingham B28 8LN United Kingdom Tel: +44 (0)121 607 3763 Fax: +44 (0)121 607 3658 E-mail: [log in to unmask] -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Victor Hernandez Sent: 24 July 2008 16:38 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [TN] Anodizing Surface Fellow TechNetters: Is a Stainless Steel anodized surface solderable?
