Yes, I am working with 300 microns diameter wire. I need access to the exposed conductive wire, mostly at the ends, but in the middle as well. Insulation is not feasible. --Scott -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Joe Fjelstad Sent: Monday, July 14, 2008 5:34 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [TN] Plated Wire in Wedge Bonding Hello Scott, Do I read it right that you want to plate aluminum bonding wire with another metal and that the wires are 300 microns in diameter? I have not heard of such but perhaps someone else has. Is there a reason why you cannot encapsulate the wires after bonding to address oxidation concerns? There are also some folks out there who have developed insulated wire that is bondable and there are as well some methods from earlier years such as stitch wire and/or resistance welding of ribbon wire that might be of interest. But it might be best to talk to some of the heavy gage wire bonding equipment suppliers to gather their experiences. Good luck Joe In a message dated 7/14/2008 11:49:41 A.M. I saw posts about bonding to plated pads on boards, but saw nothing on using or bondability with plated wires. I must avoid any oxidation on the wires. I'm trying to find out successes, feasability and wire suppliers for plated aluminum wire. Gold plating is the best for the outer coating for me. From what I've read its actually 150 microinches Ni over 5-8 microinches of Au. Also from what i've read, the nickel is doing the actual bonding. The wire is .012" or 305 um diameter. Pure gold it out of the question! :) The bonding surface is copper etched PCB, or sometimes gold plated brass. Both proven to bond well with pur AL wire.
