When coating sockets for programmable components I have always taped off the socket prior to coating or have kept a respectful distance away from it. Coating can work it's way between the leads of the component and socket interfering with electrical conductivity. Scraping off the leads on the socket and component or trying to remove the socket and repair the coating after rework is a real pain. Just curious, if you need to coat the EEPROM what is the need for the socket? If you were to coat over the socket and EEPROM it would be very difficult to remove the EEPROM after coating. We're having a discussion about conformal coating. Does anyone have any data about acrylic coating of an EEPROM after the programmed chip is placed in the socket? Does the coating cause any problems? Is it a standard practice to mask the socket, coat the board, install the chip and then coat over the chip? Thanks a bunch. And happy Friday!! Oil prices have fallen lately. We include this news for the benefit of gas stations, which otherwise wouldn't learn of it for six months. ~William D.
