If you are using press-fit connectors in a back-plane you must read and follow the instructions from the connector manufacturer carefully. They usually have some fairly tight plating thickness and hardness rules which must be followed or else you can have problems pressing the connectors during assembly or reliability issues later in the field as connectors may let go during board extractions. Tin vs. gold contacts will cause some long term reliability issue. If you current products are having this process, then it might be ok for your level of products. -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Kane, Amol (349) Sent: Thursday, September 06, 2007 10:04 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [TN] Backplane PCB surface finish Dear Technetters, Are there some distinct set of considerations that apply only to backplane PCBs? A question was raised regarding the suitability of ENIG finish for backplane assemblies. We are using ENIG for other PCBs and so far, have not run into issues that can be traced back to the ENIG finish. What are some unique considerations that must be taken into account when specifying a finish for a backplane assembly?
