Inge, That's a surprise about acetone. The CRC Handbook lists the surface tension of acetone at 25C as 23.46 mN/m and 20.66 mN/m @ 50C. There are no other entries. However, I am surprised that you are surprised with regards to H2O vs CFCs. I mean water is as close to a "non-destructive" universal solvent we have and to get CFCs to work the industry was generally adding 5% methanol etc., which was what was really doing most of the "work".
