So you're saying the justification for doing this was really a stretch, but not beyond R.E.A.C.H.. Yes, because it is cheaper to build leaded product than it is to build Pb-free, contrary to all those people who said that the cost of manufacturing 63/37 solder to the 1% who needed to use it would drive up its cost. I'm still laughing at that one. In addition to all of the warnings about reliability issues and increased environmental impact from higher processing temperatures, a number of us pointed out that if the lead is removed from solder and replaced with more tin plus silver, there would be a shortage of tin and silver, and that happened. Increased environmental impact was also seen from having to mine more lead to get more tin. Many on this forum also forecasted that. The increase in demand drove up the price of tin and silver such that a surcharge is now being placed on every gram of lead-free solder. This, along with higher energy costs, is making it more expensive to process Pb-free assemblies than leaded. Again, just like we said it would. So it stands to reason anything lead-free, including answers to questions, are gonna cost a thousand times more. In summary, we have this to say to the EU; "Well, we told you so, and you didn't listen. Now pay up, and next time listen to the industry experts so you never again legislate something so stupid as RoHS." -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Bill Kasprzak Sent: Monday, August 13, 2007 1:06 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [TN] Lead-Free Problems? I thought this was worth sharing. The Chicago Tribune has an article; "Coolest electronic gear way to hot for its own good". In the article they write: "The Xbox's failure problem has generated more than 1,100 complaints to ConsumerAffairs.com, an online publisher of consumer news and recall information. Adam Carpentieri, who said his online repair site, Xbox360-pros.com, had fixed more than 2,000 systems, surmised that the culprit was the lead-free solder Microsoft used to comply with European Union standards for reducing hazardous materials in printed circuit boards. As the solder repeatedly heats and cools, it cracks away from the circuit board's tiny copper connections, causing them, in turn, to separate and fracture." Could that possibly be?
