Thanks for the info Steve. We process tens of thousands of these PLCCs a day and applying a lube would not be practical. Also the manufacturer is a company that use to be know as AMP. Only two more days until a three-day weekend!! WOOO-HOO!! Would this large connector manufacturer be AMP? The following whitepaper might be of interest to you: http://www.tycoelectronics.com/documentation/whitepapers/pdf/sncomrep.pd f One of the points in the whitepaper was that tin contacts need lubication. Here's a couple of places to look for lubes: http://www.santovac.com/brochure/Connector_Lub.htm http://www.nyelubricants.com/lubenotes/LN_Sta_Sep_Elec-04-2.pdf Hope this helps! Steve -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Joel Alexander Sent: Thursday, August 30, 2007 7:46 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [TN] PLCC Socket Pin damage We are seeing a rash of pin damage on PLCC sockets. When the IC is inserted the contact is actually bent in half and no longer visible from the top of the socket. We suspect that the change over to RoHS compliant parts is a contributing factor. The friction between the two Matte tin parts is greater then tin/lead. The manufacturer suggested trying to obtain the ICs with bright tin (good luck with that) but then there is the big concern about tin whiskers. I was wondering if anyone is seeing the same conditions and if so are there any suggestions to minimize the problem. Also the supplier is one of the largest connector manufactures and they bought up the majority of other electronic component companies.
