Phil, I was responsible for connectors for some years and I've seen a lot of D-subs in all our products the last 20 years. Nutting has happened with D-sub connectors, they are extremely reliable. Our favorite is Amphenol's 17TW series, which have signal, power and coax in one and the same body. They are very, very rigid. Also have a look at the new Amphenol series 17 BH/HD with low insertion force contacts. Even these are very rigid connectors. Then we have Amphenol's SM2 series for SMT. After decades of PTH mounting, we, as well as others, had to try SMT for MIL and SPACE and advanced Telecom. Many old engineers doubted that the SMT would make it, but their fear was maybe little exaggerated. So, we use D-sub SMT even for harsh environment products today, and I have not heard of any problems. We are designing some new SMT boards and could put SMT connectors on to reduce or eliminate a wave or hand solder step. I am looking at D-subminiature connectors and 0.100 on center ribbon connectors. Each are available in SMT. My concern is that the SMT is less durable in a high usage or high vibration/shock environment. Saving a step isn't worth it if it created more long term failures. Thanks in advance.
