All, Let me be bold and say that the first photo incorporates an optically clear medium on the top surface of the chip such that when photons are emitted out the top surface. They exit the IC - into the optical medium. Then upon encountering the air/optical medium interface they are totally [by design/desire] reflected back into the optical medium and thereby optically coupled into a nearby photo-receptive portion of the IC without the requirement for a physical trace on the chip. The second shot appears to be of a diced wafer - active circuitry and bond pads "Up". Being a diced wafer, there are no bond wires shown, etc. If it were a normal 'flip-chip' all we would see is the bare silicon on the back-side - as the 'good' side would be down. I am still having a problem wrapping my head around these and the very first photo, although the first one also seems to have optical qualities about it. Ingemar - are we going to have to shoot you if you tell us what it is? Inge sent me two more pictures. Took me a while to post them this morning as we lost phase "A" of our three phase power into the building this morning. Been running around throwing breakers and stuff. Got the power back and now everything is back to normal. Anywho, here's Inge's pictures: http://stevezeva.homestead.com/files/H1.jpg http://stevezeva.homestead.com/files/PICT0012.jpg Obviously these are pictures of some sort of Massively Parallel Processing computer, but what? It's not a Cray... Inge, was the very first picture some sort of liquid cooling chamber for the core? -Steve- -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Ingemar Hernefjord (KC/EMW) Sent: Monday, October 09, 2006 7:01 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [TN] NTC: Friday question 2 Smaller and smarter...and not a Cray...
