That's a real stretch that Tin whiskers could be the root cause. Unlikely that it is. The laptop is probably Lead free if it were a recent one. Unlikely though that it failed because it was lead free. A more likely scenario is the battery went into thermal runaway. A definite possibility with Lithium ions in laptops and cell phones.
