Thanks for the responses, folks. So... I wonder now how many out there are specifying board material via IPC-4101/XXx vs. generic this-n-that vs. specific vendor product name? I'm guessing the preference is different depending on if you're a callout-er or a callout-ee, and on the environment. As someone whose target boardshop is never known until the lowest bid is in, I prefer a generic approach. It's good to know what the rest of the world is doing though; just for the helluvit. As far as materials go I'd probably reference 4101/98 which is a filled material with halogen retardant (polyclad 370HR being an example of the type) which gives improved via reliability from a degree of Z-axis CTE control resulting from the filler addition. I'm not sure that the halogen free materials are sufficiently mature yet and have no experience with them so can't recommend one, but 370HR is good.
