January 28, 2006 If your equipment is used in a high reliability application, you should not use any sockets. There are numerous quality issues related to sockets, dissimilar metha corrosion if socket contacts and the parts are not made of same materials, fretting corrosion, spread socket contacts, parts come out of sockets in vib or shock environment, part not fully seated in socket, etc. parts can be held in sockets using lacing cord, etc. Bottom line is it is best not to use any sockets. ----- Original Message ----- From: Ron Fowler<mailto:[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> Sent: Friday, January 27, 2006 2:46 PM Subject: [TN] Soldered J lead components vs socketed Does anyone know of a specification, study, or other document that can define "Best Practices" when it comes to soldering vs socketing 68 lead MPU. History tells me that socketed components that use sockets without some form of mechanical lock down have a tendency to back out during vibration and/or mechanical shock. Particular condition is a portable unit that gets handled pretty rough.
