I beg to differ, we use to put six 1" square raw board coupons in a single mout and prep for grinding and polishing. There out vendor with at least 6 mounts on a fixture. The biggest problem is either round square or rectangular. Size is the biggest PROBLE along with diameter of wheel and consumables. It is so much easier to have a personal phone conversion that to type all dialogue. Victor, -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Wenger, George M. That would require mounting all three PCB coupons so that the holes line up. My colleague (Pat) who I consider a world class cross sectioner can put multiple PCB coupons in a single mount and get close to the centers but not right at the center. When we do multiple coupons in a single puck he grinds and polishes to the center of first one that he gets to the center, we photograph it and then continue to the next one. The trick to getting very close to the centers on each coupon is to take each PCB coupon in a small hand held vice and close the jaws just outside of the PCB holes of interest and use the hardened jaws of the vice as a stop and grind just until you break into the hole. Do this for each PCB sample and then mount the coupons in a single puck. Since you have broken into the perimeter and opened the hole you can easily (if you use vacuum) fill the holes with mounting compound and you won't have to grind much material away. From what I've seen from Pat's talent (or maybe it's his tricks) is the real key to grinding to where you want to look is to minimize how much material needs to be ground away. So you're suggesting I continue till I can hit a 6 mil hole with my shaky hands? Well okay, I'll continue. Blair >>> [log in to unmask] 10/07/05 07:02AM >>> (chuckle) Yes, can you believe it... got no response at all, now Steve, they jumped all over his request, I'm thinking it has to do with his website and he allowing people to post pictures, and so people want to keep him happy...(laughing as people wonder how serious I am) luckily I'm past that point where I would take it personal, but years ago....hmmm, well anyway. What I'm looking for is a device to grind/polishing a single mount (3 pc board coupons in a single puck) by hand. In days past I could do a somewhat decent job, with todays smaller holes, even down past 10 to 8 and even 6 I find it difficult to hit the center of the hole +/- 10%. Beuhler makes what they call the PC-Met jr, selling cost $2500 for the kit which is crazy as they sell the complete kit for 6 mounts at $4500. So I'm looking for a used unit, or one from another source (not even sure who else might make one, perhaps Struers) So that's my need today...any suggestions would be wonderful.
