I have seen this question come up many times. There is nothing in J-STD-033 that addresses whether or not a vacuum seal is required, just that the bag needs to be sealed with Moisture Indicator Card and fresh dry dessicant. I am not sure which is better, vacuum seal or not. In the places I have worked, they have never used a vacuum seal, just a heat seal. -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Charles Caswell Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2005 12:19 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [TN] Sealer for resealing MS components... Steve, I don't know about the theories about this but we just put in the desiccant and card, squeeze most of the air out and seal. If the card is good when the bag is reopened we use the parts. ( As long as they are within the original shelf life ) -----Original Message----- From: Steve Gregory [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: Tuesday, 30 August 2005 8:43 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [TN] Sealer for resealing MS components... Good Day Everyone! First, I would like to offer my sympathies to all Technetters who were affected, or had families or freinds affected by hurricane Katrina. When resealing MS components after they've been opened, I've heard that it's not really necessary to vacuum seal them. In fact, that it's not recommended to vacuum seal them, it's better to put fresh dessicant and a HIC in the bag and then seal it. The reasoning is that if you pull a vacuum on the bag and seal it, the air inside the bag doesn't have a chance to circulate around and allow the dessicant to be as effective as it could be. Is this true? If so, doesn't anybody know of just a straight sealer without vacuum? The vacuum sealers are not cheap, and if I could find just a basic sealer that would be great.
