Susan - you may use either nickel - in fact the electroless nickel is slightly harder than electrolytic and thus should give better wear characteristics. You can use electrolytic nickel with immersion gold - the gold replaces the nickel and leaves behind the phos in electroless nickel so the reaction is basically the same - gold for nickel exchange. You can also electroplate Au over electroless Nickel. We have tested ENIG for plug to install edge connectors with no issues. Can this be the same nickel bath and applied in the same manner? Is this ever done? What happens if ENIG nickel is used for contact fingers and what happens if contact finger nickel plating is used for ENIG, if they are not interchangeable?
