Steve, Many out there are experiencing the same thing. But not for components such as aluminum oxide (not really ceramic) like what I think your picture shows. They may have lead-free finish on the pins, but that does not make them a candidate for special handling to prevent moisture-related expansion......usually. It is possible that there is a chance of damage within the encapsulant. Really hard to tell without consulting the vendor. -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Stephen Gregory Sent: Monday, July 11, 2005 4:00 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [TN] Moisture Sensitive Components (again)... Hi all ya'll!! Haven't heard anything from my big mouth in quite a while have ya'? Well, I just got back from two glorious weeks of vacation in beautiful (but rainy) North Carolina...that's why I've been so quiet. Anyways, it's about Moisture Sensitive components. You may recall my posts from a while back about us trying to get our stockroom people more in tune with MS components and proper handling, and they've been doing a great job. They come to me with a lot of questions and I actually like that. Shows me that they're trying to make sure they get it right. Well today one them came to me today with some parts that were packaged and labeled MSL 3, but they were ceramic Pin-Grid-Arrays?!? You can how they were packaged and labeled at: http://www.stevezeva.homestead.com click on Picture Page 2 and look at Ceramic PGA Packaging to see how they came to us. I've always thought that ceramic parts were not subject to moisture related concerns, am I wrong once again? It's a Cypress part, PN # 5962-9759802QXC (Military part). I called Cypress, to verify if it was a MS component or not, and got their outsourced technical support line (I think from India), and I was told I had to "submit a case" email to get my question answered. I think somebody suggested last time when I posted about this, that distributors are putting MSL labels on everything just to be safe, whether a component is MS or not....are any of you experiencing this?
