When that table was made Koa was not nearly as expensive as today. When I was in High School we used lots of Koa in woodshop. It was 1/3 the price of walnut . -----Original Message----- From: George Patrick [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: Thursday, November 11, 2004 1:01 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [TN] NTC: home computer Woah... There's a good use of taxpayer money :) ---- from http://www.kauaiframes.com/koa.html Koa Wood A native tree of Hawaii, Koa (Acacia Koa) has long since been sought after for its historic and cultural significance. It was once used for just about all building and manufacturing applications but, because it is not an easy wood to work with, it was replaced as other easier to work with woods became available. It is considered by many woodworkers and furniture makers to be one of the most beautiful, precious and rare tropical hardwoods. Now it is primarily used for making furniture, musical instruments, veneers and heirloom pieces. A small, newly made, Koa jewelry box can cost upwards of $500. A small dining set in excess of $6,000. -- George Patrick Tektronix, Inc. Central Engineering, PCB Design Group P.O. I was an ELT - Engineering Laboratory Technician - we made sure the reactor and steam plant chemistry was what it was supposed to be and that radiation and contamination levels were known and safe. One thing (among many) that made the Kam (as we called her) special was a Koa wood table in the wardroom. I just looked up Koa on the web to make sure I had the spelling right and found an informative site: http://www.kauaiframes.com/koa.html Cheers, Tim Reeves Process Engineer Tyco Electronics | Printed Circuit Group | Dallas Division 503.623.1000 Ext.1120 -----Original Message----- From: Ingemar Hernefjord (KC/EMW) [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: Thursday, November 11, 2004 1:08 AM To: Reeves, Tim R.; [log in to unmask] Subject: RE: NTC: home computer Kamehameha was seemingly something special about, send you link with pics and covering story offline.. US Navy nuclear ships have an excellent safety record, in part because tried and tested technology was used. Also, the boat I was on was built in the early sixties, so it's natural that it had technology from the fifties/sixties in it. It lasted almost forty years, with some maintenance and updates of course, which again shows it was well-designed and made. I'm sure the newer boats have more modern equipment in them, I'm just not familiar with them. Looks just like the maneuvering room control panels on the boat I was on. (SSBN642). Steam plant control panel (throttles, etc.) on the left, Reactor plant control panel (control rod shim switch, power indicators, etc.) in the center, and Electric Plant control panel on the right. The throttles don't look like something you'd imagine a computer having. The larger wheel is the forward throttle, and the smaller the back (reverse) throttle. It's 50s technology, but it was in use 'til the 90s.
