Hi Group, I live in Kansas which derives it's name from the (pronounced as) Kansaw Indians. We insist that the Arkansas River is pronounced Ar-Kansas in this state only. We call the state Ar-Kan-Saw and the river the same if they aren't within the state boundary! BTW I'm a native, but call the river Ar-Kan-Saw wherever I am in the country. We also have a street in Wichita named Greenwich. It is pronounced Green-Wich by most in town! I insist on the proper Grin-ich when I reference it. Glad it's Friday and the end of the month. More NTC I got to add my two cents to this one! As most of you know, I came out here to Tulsa, Oklahoma from California about 5-years ago. One thing that's always puzzled me out here, is why Kansas is pronounced "Can-sass", but Arkansas is pronounced "Ark-can-saw"???
