I wanted to be that once, but I became a farmer so I'd be known as a man outstanding in his field. The may have used tree sap or pitch as a glue like substance... I can never get the sticky stuff off of anything it comes into contact with... isn't that the sort of thing that formed yellow Amber which was so highly prized as a jewelry item and also played a part in the discovery of electric charges? Has anyone ever written the history of soldering? I would expect the solder manufacturing folks to have some data on the subject... Nice thread... I will follow the comments with interest... The first recorded instances of soldering (that I am aware of) are probably wall paintings on Tombs in the Valley of the Dead in Egypt dating from around 2000BC. These appear to show a line of people making jewellery, using charcoal brazier heated irons. Surprisingly adhesives go further back to around 70K BC when rosin was used to fix flint arrow heads! I believe Rosin as flux only goes back as far as the Elizabethans, possibly later. I used to have the Egyptians on 35mm slides but I must have chucked them out as they are no longer in my roof (hence delay in responding whilst looking), I got the original slides from the British Museum. Applying Tin/lead to copper foil along the edges of the pieces of glass is commonly used today in making the popular colored glass windows and lamp shades... I know, because my wife does that. Interesting project Steve... it should be fun. This should take you back to the time of Alexander Graham Bell and his cohorts... at the very least... Bill Brooks PCB Design Engineer , C.I.D., C.I.I. I'm going to write a small article about the history of soldering, and how it's evolved to what it is today. I've done a couple of searchs with Google amd Wisenut, and suprisingly, turned up few links. I'm going to keep looking, but I thought I'd ask this fine group if any of you have any good links to share about the history of soldering? Thanks a bunch! -Steve Gregory- --------------------------------------------------- Technet Mail List provided as a service by IPC using LISTSERV 1.8e To unsubscribe, send a message to [log in to unmask] with following text in the BODY (NOT the subject field): SIGNOFF Technet To temporarily halt or (re-start) delivery of Technet send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet NOMAIL or (MAIL) To receive ONE mailing per day of all the posts: send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet Digest Search the archives of previous posts at: http://listserv.ipc.org/archives Please visit IPC web site http://www.ipc.org/contentpage.asp?Pageid=4.3.16 for additional information, or contact Keach Sasamori at [log in to unmask] or 847-509-9700 ext.5315 ----------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Technet Mail List provided as a service by IPC using LISTSERV 1.8e To unsubscribe, send a message to [log in to unmask] with following text in the BODY (NOT the subject field): SIGNOFF Technet To temporarily halt or (re-start) delivery of Technet send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet NOMAIL or (MAIL) To receive ONE mailing per day of all the posts: send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet Digest Search the archives of previous posts at: http://listserv.ipc.org/archives Please visit IPC web site http://www.ipc.org/contentpage.asp?Pageid=4.3.16 for additional information, or contact Keach Sasamori at [log in to unmask] or 847-509-9700 ext.5315 ----------------------------------------------------- ::::::::::::::::::::::::::: This email, its content and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the addressee(s) and may be legally privileged and/or confidential.
