This is not only true for conformal coatings but also for some lead-free solders. They have been found to change their crystalline structure when exposed to high temperatures in a way that improves their fatigue life. This make them ideal for under-the-hood applications and other high temperature applications. It is not known if this is also caused by the Thermos Effect or some other effect. Conformal coatings have diversified rapidly over time, and it was thought that that since their arrival, uncoated assemblies would edge toward extinction. This new research has shown that is not the case. Rather the pattern of evolution shows that both assemblies and coatings responded to the evolutionary diversification with a new bout of species formation of their own. This we believe was the causal effect of this new breed of coating that seems to possess intelligence, by the fact that they are capable of altering their physical properties to suit the environmental conditions to which they are exposed. The research scientists consider that this intelligence may be related to the "Thermos Effect" (TE). The TE involves keeping hot things hot, and cold things cold, without a clear understanding of the discrimination mechanism. Consideration is now being given as to whether Technical Data Sheets should include a TE Pass / Fail notation.
