Connie, Are there any other locations in the circuit away from the lead where this part could be tapped in? Or possibly it must be there at the pin for other reasons? If it has to be there, this would be considered as a jumper wire as outlined in 11.2.5.2, which makes no mention of solder touching the body. Though not good standard practice, many rework scenarios are unique to an assembly and do not fall under 'cookie cutter' assembly techniques. Explain to your customer the issue this particular rework raises in regards to workmanship standards, gain their understanding and approval, and move forward. Here goes: We have a gull wing component that we have to add a large through-hole capacitor lead on to one of the IC leads. Per the 610 requirement, 12.2.5.5, solder may not touch the body of the component of a gull wing component. Because this is not a normal build situation, is that a requirement that has to be met? It is very difficult to solder this large lead on to this small lead, making a solid connection, without getting solder between the lead and body of the IC. I realize the 610 is a guideline for us to make decisions. So......... In your opinion, what would you do? Rework, accept as is, ..... I realize the final decision is between us and our customer, but would like to hear what others think aobut this. Thanks, Connie M. Korth Quality Specialist Reptron Mfg.
