Dave, On PCB's, thickness is typically .001" or less. The J-Std-001 limit for Parylene (Type XY) is .000394"-.00197" (Table 10-1). Thickness is very well controlled by how long the board is in the chamber. It is the only coating that is truly "conforming". As far as effective protection, I don't believe there is anything better, primarily because of its conforming nature, high dielectric strength and the fact that it goes everywhere since it is vacuum deposited. It was the only coating we used on boards going into satellites when I was in that business. As to your other questions, I will have to defer them to someone who is more knowledgeable with the chemistry of the product. ========================= Bob Barr Manufacturing Engineering Formation, Inc. ========================= > -----Original Message----- > From: David Douthit [mailto:[log in to unmask]] > Sent: Thursday, December 11, 2003 11:59 AM > To: TechNet E-Mail Forum.; Barr, Bob > Subject: Re: [TN] Parylene Piercing Press-fit Connectors... > > > Bob, > > How thin is "thin"? > > At what point would the thickness of the parylene begin to > pose problems? > > Is this "thin" parylene effectively protecting the circuitry? > > What tests are needed to determine if there are problems? > > David A.
