Turn to the pro's ---- call one or two of your distributor suppliers and ask for a walk-through of their inventory system.  The risk is that it may be more sophisticated than you need but the basics should be there.
Good luck

Hi folks,

We are in the process of re-defining our inventory/storage of components.  We currently utilize the manufacturer part number as identification, and we store the components on the shelf under a customer name or a specific PCB part number.  This has worked well for us for quite sometime, but we are finding more and more common components between customers and the boards we populate.  This makes things difficult with determining a location for a particular component.  My question is now that we have the opportunity to set up a better component Inventory/storage system, I was wanting to get a feel for what others are currently doing.  I would like to understand what system is in place that works well.  For example, how do you store components on a shelf, alphabetical, numerical?  Do you use the manufacturers part number, or determine a custom number?  How easy is it for others to locate a reel of components with your system? What type of shelving or racks works best with your system, particularly reeled components?

Thanks,
Jim
