micro hardness or needle scratch test is the
other.... you will need SEM to look at the test sites. what is the soft
gold for? you can pass the test and still fail for wirebonding due to
surface contamination. you can also test for impurity (more the
impurity, the harder the gold). It is all depend upon how large is the
pad, geometry, location, etc.etc.

You
can test Au hardness on ceramic substrates but I've never had much success
doing hardness testing of Au/Ni/Cu on epoxy glass laminate boards. Background
substrates are to soft and inconsistent to get reliable/repeatable readings or
meaningful results.
