Hi Steve - I have been working this issue more as an internal issue than an external issue (although the NASA advisory does point out a "new" potential source of xray damage to electronic assemblies we used to not have to consider). Some papers which may be of interest: 1) "Xray Inspection: Easy Does It", Feb 2002 issue of EPP, page 40, author: Tom Clifford 2) Nicolet Test Instruments Division Application Note: Ionizing Radiation and Its Effects Upon Electronic Components 3) Sandia Labs Report SAND82-2151m January 1983 4) "Filter Optimization for Xray Inspection of Surface Mounted ICs", Richard Blish II, et al, IEEE Transactions on Device and Materials Reliability, Vol. 2, No. 4, Dec 2002 The "equation" for understanding the radiation dose a component can receive is a combination of a number of factors - you just can't pick one parameter to focus on or you can get your self into trouble. Please go to: http://xnwp021.utc.com/Ebiz/supplier/NASAADVISORY.pdf and read this document. We were sent this link by one of our customers, and told that before we ship any of their hardware, the carrier must ensure that they will not expose the hardware to Tomographic X-Ray inspection. Are any of you dealing with this? If so, how, or what did you do? -Steve Gregory- --------------------------------------------------- Technet Mail List provided as a free service by IPC using LISTSERV 1.8e To unsubscribe, send a message to [log in to unmask] with following text in the BODY (NOT the subject field): SIGNOFF Technet To temporarily halt or (re-start) delivery of Technet send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet NOMAIL or (MAIL) To receive ONE mailing per day of all the posts: send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet Digest Search the archives of previous posts at: http://listserv.ipc.org/archives Please visit IPC web site http://www.ipc.org/contentpage.asp?Pageid=4.3.16 for additional information, or contact Keach Sasamori at [log in to unmask] or 847-509-9700 ext.5315 ----------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Technet Mail List provided as a service by IPC using LISTSERV 1.8e To unsubscribe, send a message to [log in to unmask] with following text in the BODY (NOT the subject field): SIGNOFF Technet To temporarily halt or (re-start) delivery of Technet send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet NOMAIL or (MAIL) To receive ONE mailing per day of all the posts: send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet Digest Search the archives of previous posts at: http://listserv.ipc.org/archives Please visit IPC web site http://www.ipc.org/contentpage.asp?Pageid=4.3.16 for additional information, or contact Keach Sasamori at [log in to unmask] or 847-509-9700 ext.5315 -----------------------------------------------------
