Hi Tony! The impact of xray on electronics is not very straight forward - the impact is a function of dose (xray strength and exposure time), equipment parameters, type of component, and physical parameters. One source of xray damage which many folks don't think about is security surveillance being done now due to the 9-11 attacks. There are a couple of good papers which may help you out: 1) Xray Inspection: Easy Does It, Electronic Packaging &Production, February 2002 Issue, Tom Clifford author 2) Nicolet Instruments, Application Notes, Ionizing Radiation and Its Effects Upon Electronic Components, (this study contains a good report from Sandia Labs) 3) Sandia Labs report # SAND82-2151 Good Luck. Hamilton Sundstrand has received a GSFC NASA Advisory warning that newly imposed x-raying and sterilization requirements & equipment may be detrimental to space flight hardware. We have adopted the following approach and I am wondering if anyone else has developed a shipping policy for programmed electronics that deals with this issue.
