Gerald: It a fairly complicated process involving pre-treatments of alkaline and acids soak cleans and anodic, cathodic electrocleans followed by a cyanide copper electroplate strike, copper plate then your nickel plate followed by gold. Unless you are very experienced in plating with a complete plating shop at your disposal I wouldn't try it. If you cut corners or skip steps you will have marginal success. This is a job best left to the experts and even then they have problems with adhesion. Reference ASTM B254 to learn more about it. Good Luck! Regards Michael Barmuta Staff Engineer Fluke Corp. Hello Technet I need to electroplate the outer surface of a stainless steel cylinder with nickel and then hard gold. The cylinder is .375" diameter by 1" long. I'm concerned about the adhesion of the nickel/gold to the stainless. Will the nickel properly adhere? Are there any chemical microetchants or adhesion promoters that guarantee success?
