It's really not that simple, there are still designs that call out old specs, and will not change, due to the time and effort it would take to get the documents rolled and signed off to approve things...welcome to the mil world.

It is really very simple; two words, new work.  Both 55110 and 50884 are
inactive for new designs.  You want to be part of getting the work
supporting new designs you want to be 31032.
