Our production floor is dealing with an ENIG board for the first time.
Several components need to be hand-soldered, and they are finding they need
their irons hotter. Any recommendations on how much hotter?
They have been asking about whether they need to tin the gold areas first,
like they would a gold plated connector pin. I said no, the gold is a
negligible amount, they are actually, in effect, trying to solder to the
nickel underneath. Just wanted to make sure my facts were straight.
The boards were wave soldered - there are a large number of thru-hole
components on the board - and the flow through wasn't as good as a previous
rev with Immersion Tin. I suspect that the assembly house has not had a
lot, or maybe even any, experience dealing with ENIG finishes before. Any
recommendations that you suggest we give them for the next run of boards?

Regards,
Genny.
