Fred A homeplate aperture is a stencil opening shaped like a baseball homeplate. The pointy bit is towards the centroid of the part. The idea with them is that you avoid a lot of solder ball issues by reducing or eliminating the paste squeeze-out to the sides of the component, but still have enough paste to provide a good fillet. Very helpful if you are running a no-clean process. regards, Graham Collins Process Engineer, Northrop Grumman Canada Corporation Halifax (902) 873-2000 ext 6215 >>> [log in to unmask] 05/27/03 10:49AM >>> What is a homeplate aperture? Thanks, -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Howard Watson Sent: Thursday, May 22, 2003 5:38 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [TN] Sideways Resistors Technetters, I'm not sure if others see this situation, but it's a somewhat rare occurrence when we see some resistors, like 0805's, soldered on their sides. Though it's not a defect per the conditions of IPC-A-610, I am still curious as to the root cause. I don't know if they somehow get placed on their side or if they get pulled up that way during soldering. Our P&P machine is a Mydata MY15, we use no-clean with reflow in air, HASL boards, 6 mil stencil w/ homeplate apertures. Any thoughts?
