The purpose of this specification is to define standard practices for handling various kinds of optical fiber and to define the specifications and guidelines to be used in the design of carriers for these fibers in component manufacturing. This document is identified in the overarching IPC-0040, Optoelectronic Assembly and Packaging Technology. This standard does not define a particular carrier design, but does define enough parameters to facilitate the use of fiber carriers in optoelectronic component manufacturing, particularly in automated or semi-automated processes. 15 pages. IPC-ER-18; Interactive CD: Electronic Reference for Through-Hole and Surface Mount Component Identification

IPC's widely-used Desk Reference Manual for Component Identification (DRM-18) has gone digital! ER-18, our new "Electronic Reference" and training tool, contains many features not possible in the printed version. For instance, the ability to add your own company-specific text for any component and then update all user versions instantly! (Try that with paper.) The "Add Text" mode also allows for translation into any language supported by your Windows operating system. Add as many languages or as much company-specific text as you need. (Note: does not currently support IMEs, or "Input Method Editors.") You can even add your own custom photos or graphics to illustrate components or processes specific to your facility. ER-18 allows you to attach up to five of your own company-specific images per every component page.
