You never find these pieces because they never actually reach the floor, if you watch carefully as they fall, you will see them just snick out sight the moment before they hit. What they then do is wait around in whatever dimension they're in and then reappear just after you have given up hope/replaced them/the project failed or whatever. This is because the energy they need to stay in this mystery dimension comes from their usefulness factor.
