Grant, If the boards are conformally coated, I suggest you completely strip them, clean them and re-coat them. Any components that are not coated, I would replace as they're probably not sealed in any way (mechanical switches, trim pots, etc). Check carefully for corrosion damage - the composition of the smoke will depend on the materials combusted, and you could have all kinds of acidic or alkalinic nasties in there. If the boards are not coated, I would be much more concerned about being able to check sufficiently well for smoke damage. Whether you trash them or not will depend on their value. If the PCB's and components are expensive, I would consider thoroughly cleaning the assemblies, removing all the components, carefully checking the boards and components separately for damage and remounting the components that are OK. Reliability should not then be impaired unless your cleaning and inspection processes are doubtful.
