Grant, Smoke is: * in the short term - cause resistive bridging of electric circuit, and * in the long term - highly corrosive. The cleaning is very complicated, as it is also sticky. If you can - trash them. Otherwise - clean thoroughly with: * first - solvents (IPA, etc.), then * with detergent, then * rinse, then * check cleanliness, * check thoroughly, including re-calibration. If it is a product then its reliability will be low - let your customer know (he will smell it anyway).
