Roger, In a former life we used Kapton labels that could be preprinted and bonded to the solder side of the board before wave solder. They worked very well. Brady (there a host of other vendors) offers labels that can be printed via Thermal Transfer, Laser, Ink Jet and Dot Matrix. We have a 0.25 x 0.75 label on which we are able to successfully print a Code 39 bar code. One of the responses mentioned Drop-on-Demand ink jet printing, specifically Markem's print system. Initially we were only considering Continuous Ink Jet systems, but now would like to include DoD for consideration, and I'm having trouble finding information. Does anyone know the advantages / disadvantages between the CIJ and DoD ink jet systems ? Does anyone have experience with a DoD system ? Note: when discussing this, the question always comes up: why not consider laser printing ?? Our concerns are: first we are a contract manufacturer and we see every conceivable type of PCB known, and therefore, second we're worried about potential damage to the PCB traces, and lastly it seems that reworking the marking would be difficult.
