Points well made. Not trying to degrade the process by any means. Our quality system uses the ISO Format but we are not applying for Certification, at least not at this point in time. Should we do so, I am sure it would be in some part, market driven. Have not been able to get any one to listen to date, so I use tools I have with the quality group that meets every two weeks and we do get results, in spite of it all. The ISO standard is simply a guide, as such there are many ways for a company to apply it...some companies do so with success, some without, some do so for marketing, some from coercion by customers. I don't see the standard changing to more "relaxed" requirements, just relaxed methods of verifying conformance...sort of like saying...you're the 'responsible' person...be responsible... As early as last week at an ASQ Conf I listened to a video tape of Dr. Juran and ( at 98 years young he is as clear in thinking and speaks as you and I) he expressed disappointment in ISO because it reduces the requirements a company is required to meet, AFTER the same company spent time and effort increasing their own internal requirements. So, why go to ISO, because the competition is. Anyone who was at the 54th North East Quality Conference in Mystic Connecticut heard the same words I did. The same sentiment was expressed of the new 6 Sigma program. New name for the same Cause and Effect Analysis we al have been using for years. (Per-Erik forgive me but this should be required reading for everyone!!) The cost is about $45 US. It's 74 pages counting the Appendix. For your information, I have now finished the report I have been working on regarding how to assure quality of electronic hardware. It has the title "Performance-based Quality Assurance of Electronic Hardware". You can find more information about it on http://www.ivf.se/Elektronik/vi_report_reliability/default.htm. It is not published by IVF but you can order it from our website if you want to buy it. Per-Erik Tegehall IVF Below is one paragraph from a section critical of ISO9000. Anyone with enough guts to be critical of the ISO process in writing needs to be read! David A. Douthit Manager LoCan LLC ============================ It is hard to understand why ISO9000 has gained so much attention and by so many is seen as the panacea for achieving quality. Maybe, in this era of outsourcing and optimizing of profits, the wish to consider price only has blurred the view of people. This wish has become so strong that people see what they want to see and not what they actually do see. For a buyer, ISO9000 has then become an attractive illusion that would make it possible to consider price only as long as suppliers have ISO9000 certified quality management systems. Whereas for a manufacturer, it offers the illusion that quality can be bought and implemented with a comparatively low price without any real understanding of what is required for achieving quality, a quick fix. The similarity with the fairy-tail "The Emperor's New Clothes" by H. C. Andersen is striking. --------------------------------------------------- Technet Mail List provided as a free service by IPC using LISTSERV 1.8e To unsubscribe, send a message to [log in to unmask] with following text in the BODY (NOT the subject field): SIGNOFF Technet To temporarily halt or (re-start) delivery of Technet send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet NOMAIL or (MAIL) To receive ONE mailing per day of all the posts: send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet Digest Search the archives of previous posts at: http://listserv.ipc.org/archives Please visit IPC web site http://www.ipc.org/html/forum.htm for additional information, or contact Keach Sasamori at [log in to unmask] or 847-509-9700 ext.5315 ----------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Technet Mail List provided as a free service by IPC using LISTSERV 1.8e To unsubscribe, send a message to [log in to unmask] with following text in the BODY (NOT the subject field): SIGNOFF Technet To temporarily halt or (re-start) delivery of Technet send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet NOMAIL or (MAIL) To receive ONE mailing per day of all the posts: send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet Digest Search the archives of previous posts at: http://listserv.ipc.org/archives Please visit IPC web site http://www.ipc.org/html/forum.htm for additional information, or contact Keach Sasamori at [log in to unmask] or 847-509-9700 ext.5315 ----------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Technet Mail List provided as a free service by IPC using LISTSERV 1.8e To unsubscribe, send a message to [log in to unmask] with following text in the BODY (NOT the subject field): SIGNOFF Technet To temporarily halt or (re-start) delivery of Technet send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet NOMAIL or (MAIL) To receive ONE mailing per day of all the posts: send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet Digest Search the archives of previous posts at: http://listserv.ipc.org/archives Please visit IPC web site http://www.ipc.org/html/forum.htm for additional information, or contact Keach Sasamori at [log in to unmask] or 847-509-9700 ext.5315 ----------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Technet Mail List provided as a free service by IPC using LISTSERV 1.8e To unsubscribe, send a message to [log in to unmask] with following text in the BODY (NOT the subject field): SIGNOFF Technet To temporarily halt or (re-start) delivery of Technet send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet NOMAIL or (MAIL) To receive ONE mailing per day of all the posts: send e-mail to [log in to unmask]: SET Technet Digest Search the archives of previous posts at: http://listserv.ipc.org/archives Please visit IPC web site http://www.ipc.org/html/forum.htm for additional information, or contact Keach Sasamori at [log in to unmask] or 847-509-9700 ext.5315 -----------------------------------------------------
