Hi Bill,

You wanna' see one that slipped by me? Go to:

http://www.stevezeva.homestead.com

and look at "Would you wave this?". This also is a board that's been built here before, but the last time it was built was in the early 90's. The last time the work instructions were updated was 1992, according to the revision history on the cover page. I told the M.E. that's responsible for it now (the one who originally wrote the work instructions is long gone), that I think he should change the work instructions and not wave this board...he asked me why. Told him him; "Trust me, you're better off hand-soldering the through hole.

The picture is the bottomside of the fab...it's mixed technology, not a whole lot of through-hole, basically right angle connectors at the end, a PTH filter, and some axial stuff.

Would YOU wave this assembly?

-Steve Gregory-

I guess I should clarify also that this is a board that has been made for years. Without the soldermask coming in over solder. The board has been around more than 10 years and this was a shock to the manufacturing folks when it happened... we just don't see this sort of thing happen anymore.... I think the last time I saw this was in 1985.  We all learned to call out SMOBC to get the vendors to avoid making the boards with solder under the soldermask. In fact, it took some convincing of some engineers that the board would be fine without a solder coat over the entire copper surface, and that they only needed the solder where the component lead was...
I'm sure there are some of you guys that are my age (46) that remember this stuff... its just so surprising to see it in this day and age... :)
